Huptown Funk

Huptown Funk is a 12 piece ensemble dedicated to playing funk based popular music. Started in 2024 by Paul Barrett the first band consisted of Ben Tucker and Chris Terry on Guitar, Keith Dorion on Bass, Chris Ryan on Drums, Dave Pos on Keyboards. Nick Fisher on Saxophones and Paul Barrett on Trombone.

The second band added Jakob Terry on Vocals, Bassist Aidan Zann-Roland and Drummer David Burton.

The third version of Huptown Funk included Vocalist Tom Thomson, Bassist Jamie Gatti, Keyboardist Trevor Wentzell and introduced The Huptown Horns. These members of the New Horizons Band program were:

The fourth version of this group included Dave Staples on Keyboards and Josh Robinson on Vocals.
New material for this band included:

The fifth version of this band included: Charlie Cooley on Percussion.

The sixth and final band was sponsored by the Atlantic Federation of Musicians through the Music Performance Trust Fund. A requirement of this performance was for every member of the group to be a Musician’s Union member and several of the players joined the union for this gig.

The Slide Project

The Slide Project is a tribute to jazz Trombonists JJ Johnson and Kai (Ky) Winding whose recordings of their duo were made from 1954 through 1956. Both of these accomplished players contributed original compositions and arrangements of jazz classics.
Simon Oakey and Paul Barrett are two Nova Scotian Trombonists featured in this group. Called PB and Si Play JJ and Kai – these two jazz musicians have played three successful performances at Roadside Willies Restaurant in Bible Hill as part of the Sunday Jazz series, The Lion’s Head Tavern in Halifax as part of the Sunday Jazz program there and at the Antigonish Jazz festival.

The rhythm section has been well-known freelance jazz Pianists Dave Staples and Olivier Neron-Bilodeau, Bassists Larry Bjornson and St. F.X. Jazz Faculty member Dr. Paul Rushka along with seasoned professional Drummer David Burton.
